International Conservation Day – A Global Call to Protect Our Planet | Fundación Cayos Cochinos | November 27th, 2024 |

International Conservation Day, marked on November 27th, was established in 2024 by U.S. President Joe Biden during his historic visit to the Amazon rainforest. This proclamation symbolizes the critical need for coordinated global action to combat climate change and preserve biodiversity. President Biden's announcement highlighted the shared responsibility of nations, communities, and individuals in conserving our planet’s most vital ecosystems.

Biden’s Visit to the Amazon

During his visit, Biden collaborated with international partners to announce the Brazil Restoration and Bioeconomy Finance Coalition. This ambitious initiative aims to mobilize $10 billion by 2030 for land restoration and sustainable bioeconomy projects, reflecting the vital role of the Amazon in regulating the planet's climate. Supporting Brazil’s bold conservation vision, Biden emphasized that protecting the rainforest not only curbs climate change but also secures livelihoods and biodiversity.

Conservation Efforts at Fundación Cayos Cochinos

At Fundación Cayos Cochinos, we embrace the principles championed on International Conservation Day. Our focus is on preserving the unique marine ecosystems of the Cayos Cochinos Marine Protected Area (MPA). Through education, restoration, and community engagement, we strive to protect fragile coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and the diverse species that call these habitats home.

By safeguarding these ecosystems, we contribute to global conservation goals while empowering local communities to sustain their natural resources.

How You Can Contribute to Conservation

Everyone has a role to play in preserving the environment. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  1. Reduce and Reuse: Minimize waste by prioritizing reduction and reuse over recycling.

  2. Avoid Single-Use Plastics: Switch to reusable bags, bottles, and containers.

  3. Conserve Energy and Water: Opt for energy-efficient appliances and adopt habits like turning off unused lights and fixing leaks.

  4. Support Restoration Efforts: Donate to or volunteer with organizations focused on conservation (like us! :) )

  5. Advocate for Policy Change: Encourage governments to adopt sustainable practices and invest in clean energy solutions.

  6. Educate and Inspire: Share knowledge on social media about conservation with friends and family to inspire collective action.

International Conservation Day is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. As global ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change and unsustainable practices, we must work together to protect the planet for future generations. Join us in this vital mission to conserve our natural treasures and build a sustainable future.
